What Are the Top Research Priorities of the ATRI?
The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) Board of Directors recently listed the Top Research Priorities of 2017. The advisory committee developed these topics at a meeting in Dallas this past March, and approved the finalized list at a meeting last week.
The topic of technology in trucks will be examined heavily. More specifically, the impact of technology on drivers will be studied to determine whether or not the devices help improve safety or exacerbate the problem by distracting drivers.
The impact of regulations will also be studied, and administrators will be discussing the possibility of a standardized methodology for handling regulatory impact analyses (RIA). If this goes through, it may help identify and even reduce the cost of regulatory compliance.
With bottlenecks becoming a more popular topic, administrators will discuss how a more flexible approach to hours-of-service rules may help to lessen the pain of road congestion on the trucking industry.
E-commerce is a type of technology which has had a major impact on the freight industry, and ATRI officials will work on mapping out the precise impacts of these changes. Another type of technology which has impacted trucking is autonomous vehicles. This topic will be discussed as well, mainly with how the operational environment and driving requirements for commercial drivers may be changed as driverless vehicles become more popular.
ATRI is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research organization. It is engaged in critical research relating to freight transportation’s essential role in maintaining a safe, secure and efficient transportation system.
