Strategies for Managing Stress on Long Drives

Though some truckers wouldn’t admit it, transporting freight long distances can be very stressful.

Demanding dispatchers, demanding receivers, and a plethora of timelines and conditions to adhere to is a recipe for stress. This can be compounded if the driver is dealing with personal issues, or if they’re encountering some erratic traffic on the way to their destination.

Managing stress is key for having a more fulfilling work-life, and for maintaining a better level of health. There are a few strategies drivers can use to handle things when the pressure gets a little excessive.

The first strategy is one that can be applicable in almost any situation. Stepping away from a stressful environment, even only temporarily, can work wonders for a person’s psyche. Sometimes drivers don’t always have the luxury of parking their truck and getting out to walk around for a few minutes. But when the opportunity presents itself, it’s a wise idea to consider.

There are also a number of common devices that can help a person deal with stress. Stress balls are a classic example, and even fidget spinners, their modern successor, can be helpful to take a driver’s mind off the demands of the road when they’re able to find a stationary moment.

Another similar strategy drivers can use to handle stress is to occupy their mind with other things once they’ve gotten a break. Reading, talking with others, and even playing various app games can all be great ways to keep the brain active while taking the focus off the stresses of the road.

Sometimes drivers are stressed due to the nature of a job, while other times it can simply be a hectic day that causes the problem. When the demands of one company or client become too much, it may be time to consider work elsewhere. Though opportunities are sometimes hard to come by in trucking, a permanent change of scenery can be the best solution when stress levels are high.

Stress is something every trucker has to deal with, and it can greatly affect their trip. Knowing how to manage it is vital for a long and healthy career.
