St. Christopher Fund and Partners Keeping Truckers Healthy
St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund (SCF) is a nonprofit charity organization that was started as a way to help professional truck drivers with financial needs that are due to medical problems.
Each year, TravelCenters of America, operator of the TA and Petro Stopping Centers, hosts a campaign, this year called “Band Together for SCF”, in which employees and customers of TravelCenters are asked to donate to the cause. Everyone working or shopping at any the 256 TravelCenters and Petro Stopping Centers were invited to donate $1 or $5. People that supported with $1 were given a commemorative wristband. Those that chose to give $5 received an SCF keychain.
Every year they manage to surpass the total donation amount of the year before and this year was no exception. This year they were able to present a record-setting check of $315,331 to the SCF when their August drive ended. Since 2010, they have united people in an effort to help truckers that are suffering financial hardship because of medical conditions that suffer from. Thus far, they have managed to collect about $1.7 million dollars, every cent of which goes straight to the SCF.
Tom O’Brien, President and CEO of TravelCenters thanked customers, employees and vendors for their generous giving. “At TravelCenters, we want to make sure our professional drivers are treated with the utmost respect,” O’Brien said. “When illness or tragedy strikes, SCF can help make sure they receive needed care and financial assistance, so all they have to focus on is getting healthy and getting back on the road safely.”
Executive director of the SCF, Dr. Donna Kennedy said, “I’m simply overwhelmed with gratitude to the drivers and employees that donate through Band Together.” Kennedy said that there has been 55 more applications to the program already this year than all of 2014 and is thankful that the campaign was able to raise even more than it did in any previous year. Since inception, the SCF has been about to help over 1,350 truck drivers. But the SCF doesn’t stop with medical financial assistance. They want all truckers to be healthy and well protected, and this year they have teamed up with two health retail
businesses to provide CDL holders with free trivalent flu shots. Supported by OOIDA and Con-way, SCF has arranged for truckers to present a special voucher at either Walgreens locations or The Little Clinic, which is located inside some Kroger, King Soopers, JayC, Dillons and Fry’s Stores. The 5 organizations will work together to foot the bill so you can get vaccinated just in time for flu season.
To get your voucher, you can catch up with the OOIDA tour truck, driver by Job Osburn and the Spirit. Their next stop is the Petro in Kenly, N.C., Oct. 3-6. Throughout the fall, they will make multiple stops in Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kansas and Oklahoma. If you can’t make it out to visit the truck, you can email firstname.lastname@example.org and the SCF will send you a voucher. To use your voucher, simple present it with your CDL at any Walgreens or The Little Clinic locations. You don’t have to be an OOIDA member and you don’t have to make an appointment.
