OOIDA’s Truckers for Troops Event to Begin Soon
The Owner-Operator Independent Driver’s Association (OOIDA) is currently gearing up for their tenth Truckers for Troop care package campaign. The event is schedule to take place from November 7th to November 11th.
This tradition began in 2007, and OOIDA has already received a $2,000 donation from Shell Rotella for this year’s event. The care packages will be sent to those serving in the military and currently stationed in combat zones.
A number of veteran facilities and organizations will also be receiving help from OOIDA. This will come in the form of assistance and housing for wounded or disabled vets.
OOIDA also has their own radio show, named “Land Line Now,†on Sirius XM 146. During the Truckers for Troops week, OOIDA will be broadcasting on their station each day.
The organization will allow truckers to join or renew their membership for $35, with 10 percent of the proceeds going toward the care packages. OOIDA will also match this total with their own money. In order to have a membership/renewal fee go toward the care packages, it must be collected before November 14th.
Truckers for Troops has been a very successful organization, providing care packages for nearly a decade and raising more than $500,000 since the event first began. The association has provided care packages for approximately 45,000 military personnel so far.
Personal letters and cards can also be included in the packages, and OOIA director of public relations Norita Taylor spoke about this choice, saying: “We like getting handmade cards or letters from a variety of groups and individuals to include in the packages. A personal note or card adds warmth to what we send.â€
Those with military personnel serving in a combat zone can submit their information to firstname.lastname@example.org to help ensure they receive a care package. Trucking has always been closely associated with the military, as many personnel who return home transition into a truck driving career.
