EPA Names SmartWay Award Winners in Freight Industry

Each year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) bestows the SmartWay Excellence Award on the agency’s top partners in shipping and logistics. The EPA heads up the SmartWay Transport Partnership, which was created in 2004 to encourage businesses all across the nation to do their work in a way that shows environmental responsibility. There are about 600 business that choose to be members of the program.

The award is given to those that have demonstrated an advanced effort to better the environment and gone above and beyond to reduce their freight emissions. The companies work to lessen their carbon footprint, help make the air cleaner, and still manage to save on fuel costs. Companies may do this a variety of ways, including implementing cutting-edge technology, changing their operating practices, working with the EPA, and hosting public awareness about sustainability, all while using a specialized system to report and validate their SmartWay data.

In addition to giving recognition to retailers, manufacturers, and logistics companies, the EPA also honors their top truck, barge and multi-modal carrier partners who are reaching benchmarks and setting the standards for how they conduct their day to day businesses, with a focus on how they move their cargo.

“SmartWay partners know that improving freight supply chain efficiency is not only good for business, but also good for our shared environment,” said Janet McCabe, Acting Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. “These award-winning partners are leaders among their peers, saving fuel, reducing pollution that contributes to climate change and poor air quality, and saving their customers money – a triple play.”

Since inception, the members of the program has kept over 60 million metric tons of carbon pollution due to emissions form entering our air, saved over 140 million barrels of oil, and amassed over $20 billion in fuels savings. All of these add up to a healthier environment with less smog and cleaner air for all of America.

The awards for shippers and logistic companies were handed out on Oct 13th, at the EPA’s Third Vehicle Technology Showcase in the group’s National Vehicle &

Fuel Emissions Laboratory. The event showcased ground-breaking technologies that can cut greenhouse gasses from big rigs while improving their fuel efficiency. The SmaryWay Excellence awardees will be recognized on Oct 19th at the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Annual Management Conference and Exhibition in Philadelphia. The winners are Armada, Appleton Coated, Bacardi USA, Canon USA, Gorton’s, Hewlett-Packard, Kimberly-Clark, Lowe’s, Menlo Logistics, Home Depot and Whirlpool.
